Mode of Action:

Endorphins, a chemical found in the brain of mammals, are automatically released in response to pain.  Endorphins act as natural analgesics to enable the body to cope with discomfort.  Horses produce endorphins in their brain in response to pain. 
 
Nature, in its wisdom, to protect the horse and other species from completely blocking its own pain and further injuring itself, limits the level of endorphin production with an internal enzyme system.
 
Those of us who have suffered with chronic pain understand that such discomfort seems to build on itself, largely because the endorphin output  diminishes over time.  Horses with chronic arthritis, navicular disease, general body soreness and other long term conditions, suffer from the same phenomenon.
 
Scientists surmise that the amino acids, dl phenylalanine and l leucine “bind reversibly to enkephalinases and prevent enzymatic degradation”  thereby preserving the endorphins and allowing the horse to  better control his own pain level.  Within limits, the more he hurts, the more comfort inducing endorphins he can produce.
 
Along with increases in the level of comfort, these amino acids are thought to produce a feeling of well being which aids willingness to perform.
